Flowability

The Flodex apparatus consists of a receptable cylinder with interchangeable discs with holes of various diameters at the bottom. The determination of flowability is based upon the ability of the powder to fall freely through a hole in the disc. The smaller the hole through which the powder falls freely, the better is the flowability. Fifty grams of material is loaded carefully into the cylindrical container to fill it to within approximately 1 cm of the top. Tap the funnel lightly so that the powder is introduced without packing. After loading, wait about 30 secondsthen move the release lever and watch if the powder flows. Start with a 16 mm flow disc for powders not previously tested. If the test is positive, repeat the procedure with smaller discs until the test is negative. If the powder does not flow, repeat the test with discs with larger holes until thetest is positive. The Flowdex flowability is defined as 1000 divided by the diameter in millimeters of the smallest hole through which the sample will pass three consecutive tests. The Flodex is ideal for determining the intrinsic flowability of powders and highly recommended for the quality control of powders. Enables measurement of angle of repose and bulk density while eliminating operator's influence, that is quite common for this type of measurement. The smaller the angle of repose of a dry material, the easier its flow. The opposite is also true for stepper slopes. Angle of repose is a direct indication of flowability. Its determination is simple and the result is a combinaison of the properties that affect flow such as : shape, size, porosity, cohesion, fluidity, surface et apparent density. The Hall flowability method is the measurement of time necessary for a free-flowing powder to pass though a standardized funnel. Geometry, internal surface finish, opening are defined in standards B 213, ISO 4490, ASTM B 212 an ISO 3923/1. This traditional technique should be used only with free-flowing metal powder (or similar).

The manual Tablet Hardness Tester is the ideal tool for in-situ measurement of tablet hardness. This enables the user to react quickly to adjust the compression force of a tablet press and reduce the costs created by tablets produced out of specified hardness limits. Due to its light weight construction (approx.1 kg.) and the independent power supply (battery charged) it can easily be carried from tablet press to tablet press. To measure, the safety cover is opened, the sample placed in the measuring station and is pressed against a metal plate (connected to an electronic load-cell) moved by a handwheel, until the sample brakes. The result of the measurement is shown on the built-in LCD in either N, kN, kg or lb. Using the supplied brush, the tablet debris and dust can be transported into the collection box located under the test station. When the collection box is full, it can be easily removed and emptied. Calibration of the unit is quite simple. Every time the unit is switched on it fulfils an automatic self-calibration (zero calibration).
